21 Days of Gratitude – Day 2: Perspective

“And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there.”

‭‭Numbers‬ ‭13:27-28‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Today, I’m grateful for perspective.

I’m grateful to be able to look back at the events and experiences of this year, and see them for what they were and through the right lens.

It can be hard to see our failures and mistakes in the correct proportions to the rest of our existence, or to keep our view of our successes “to scale”, not magnifying them beyond their impact. Sometimes, we need to give a situation time before we make our “professional” assessment, in order to keep fear or pride from becoming the driving forces behind our decision making.

Like driving through a city, the buildings seem so tall they almost touch the sky, too high to imagine reaching the tops, yet as you pass them by, they appear a mere miniatures in the distance.

Like the children of Israel, I needed a change of perspective to move from seeing myself as a grasshopper, and instead as a child of God, well able to take possession of the Promised Land before me. I’m no longer worried about the giants, because I know that the God I serve is bigger.
